Brent C. here, time to break down the action from week 2’s bout between the Chicago Bears and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
As a dedicated Chicago Bears fan, I have to breakdown this painful loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week 2. This game exposed the same glaring problems for the Bears – a struggling Justin Fields and an inconsistent defense.
The Bears showed promise on their opening drive with Fields finding Darnell Mooney for a long touchdown. But the offense sputtered after that despite having playmakers like D.J Moore, Cole Kmet and Khalil Herbert.
Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy’s questionable playcalling centered around the pass, even though the Bears have a talented trio of running backs in Roschon Johnson, Khalil Herbert and Dont’a Foreman. With the offensive line struggling in pass protection, leaning on the run could have opened things up for Fields.
The third year quarterback had flashes, like on the opening scoring drive, but still made critical errors. Fields held the ball too long, was indecisive in the pocket, and threw two interceptions including a pick-six. The offensive line did him no favors, allowing constant pressure.
On defense, Head coach Matt Eberflus had no answers for the Bucs passing attack. The front seven generated little pressure as the Bucks picked apart the Bears secondary. Missed tackles were also a huge issue, especially with key injuries impacting the defensive backfield.
Overall, the Bears were undisciplined, committing 10 penalties for 91 yards. Offensive tackle Braxton Jones had multiple false start infractions that killed drives early. Chicago simply can’t win by beating itself.
At 0-2, huge questions remain on both sides of the ball heading into a week 3 matchup against Patrick Mahomes and the high-powered Kansas City Chiefs.
As a loyal Bears fan, I’m trying to stay positive and patient. But performances like this are very concerning. The coaches have a lot of work to do to fix the inconsistent offense and porous defense. One thing is for certain – us fans will stick with our beloved Monsters of the Midway no matter what!
