Hey there, fellow Bears Fans!
The Chicago Bears came into Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns hoping to win their third straight game. However, questionable coaching decisions, ineffective offense, and a late game collapse led the Bears to a shocking 20-17 loss.
The game started out looking positive for Chicago. On defense, stars like linebacker Trevis Gipson and safety Eddie Jackson made big plays including a pick-six interception return for a touchdown by Gipson. The defense held the Browns scoreless in the first quarter. On offense, the Bears put together a drive in the second quarter finished off by a Justin Fields touchdown pass to give them a 14-7 halftime lead.
However, the troubles soon started in the second half. The running game with David Montgomery struggled, gaining only 93 total rushing yards. Justin Fields completed just 17 of 33 passes for 133 yards, facing constant pressure against Cleveland’s elite defense. He was sacked 3 times and threw a costly interception. Despite the defense forcing 4 Joe Flacco interceptions, the offense could not capitalize.
Play calling was widely criticized after the loss. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy made several questionable calls rather than leaning on the running game. The Bears tried passing too often even in rainy weather conditions. Getsy also failed to adjust to the defensive pressure on Fields in the pocket. There were too many unsuccessful horizontal plays and gadgets instead of straight ahead runs.
But the most shocking part of the game came in the 4th quarter. Leading 17-7 with just minutes remaining, coach Matt Eberflus elected to go for a 4th down conversion instead of an easy field goal. When the try failed, it opened the door for a Browns comeback. The Chicago defense totally collapsed, giving up 13 unanswered points in rapid succession to lose 20-17. The loss wasted brilliant performances by defenders like Montez Sweat who had 2.5 sacks.
The final dagger came on the last play Hail Mary throw by Fields on the game’s final play. Intended receiver Darnell Mooney incredulously dropped the pass in the end zone that would have been the game-winning touchdown. It perfectly encapsulated the misery for Bears fans in squandering a certain victory.
The loss drops the Bears to 3-11 on the season with more questions than answers. Justin Fields has shown regression in recent weeks as the offensive struggles continue under Eberflus and Getsy. And the late game defensive collapse shows a lack of killer instinct. Chicago will try to recover and find answers in next week’s game against the 4-9 Arizona Cardinals. But this loss is one that may linger for awhile.
Bear Down Bears fans! and as always… PEACE!
