The Chicago Bears need to upgrade at quarterback, and there are options beyond consensus top 2024 NFL draft prospect Caleb Williams. One intriguing possibility is 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jaden Daniels out of LSU. The dual-threat quarterback had a breakout season, throwing for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns with just 4 interceptions. He also ran for 1,134 yards, showing dynamic scrambling skills.
Daniels has ideal size at 6’4″ and 210 pounds with room to fill out his frame. His powerful arm allows him to deliver accurate deep balls and quickly hit receivers on short and intermediate routes. Daniels originally started his college career at Arizona State, where he put up decent but unspectacular numbers like 2,900 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2021. However, his transfer to LSU and offense-minded head coach Brian Kelly unleashed Daniels’ full potential.
LSU receivers Malik Nabors and Brian Thomas Jr. emerged as Daniels’ top targets in 2023. Nabors delivered a huge season with 89 receptions, 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns. The 6’0″, 200-pound wideout was an unheralded player who broke out thanks to his chemistry with Daniels. Thomas, a 6’4″ 205-pound junior, also came out of nowhere to produce 68 catches, 1,177 yards and 17 touchdowns. The physically gifted duo supplied the big-play ability to optimize Daniels’ passing talents.
In addition to 3,800+ passing yards, Daniels ran for over 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons at LSU. This shows he possesses the pure running threat that’s so valuable in today’s NFL, much like Bears quarterback Justin Fields. Daniels has clearly shown the ability to ignite an offense with both his arm and legs. After languishing with uninspiring coaching at Arizona State, Daniels entered a scheme that tapped into his upside.
The Bears recently interviewed former Cardinals head coach and USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. While nothing is confirmed, there is speculation they met with Kingsbury to pick his brain about coaching Caleb Williams this past season. Williams won the 2022 Heisman Trophy and is considered the likely first quarterback off the board in the 2024 draft. If the Bears want Williams though, they’d probably need a top 5 pick.
Daniels and Williams both have dynamically athletic skill sets combined with impressive passing numbers against top college defenses. The question is which QB would be the better fit for the Bears as they seek a franchise-changing playmaker. Do they prefer Daniels’ extra year of experience combined with his 2023 explosion? Or will Williams’ higher long-term ceiling still entice them?
Much depends on who the Bears hire as their next offensive coordinator. They are searching for a replacement after firing the struggling Luke Getsy. The new OC needs an innovative scheme that accentuates the strengths of whichever young quarterback the team drafts. Developing an explosive offense is crucial not only to lift the production of Daniels/Williams but also skill position weapons like Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet.
In the end, both Jaden Daniels and Caleb Williams present exciting options if the Bears want to reboot at QB. Daniels’ standout season showcased his readiness to make an instant impact. Yet Williams possesses intriguing superstar potential if a team is willing to invest more development time. As the draft and offseason continues, Bears fans will be tracking whether one of these electric prospects ends up leading the Chicago offense next season.
