The Chicago Bears hold the #1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and rumors continue to swirl that USC quarterback Caleb Williams could be their choice to reboot the most critical position on the roster. Williams took over as starter for the Sooners in 2021 after outplaying 5-star recruit Spencer Rattler, ultimately dethroning him and later winning the Heisman Trophy. An undeniably gifted passer, Williams repeated his statistical success in 2022. However, some red flags emerged that the Bears must weigh.

There is no questioning Williams’ baseline talent – his arm strength allows him to make any throw, he shows the ability to go through progressions and make anticipatory passes, and he has underrated athleticism to create off schedule. The production jumping from the Big 12 to the Pac 12 also creates belief in his transitional upside. Furthermore, Williams has the gunslinger mentality often desired in a QB1, willing to take risks and thread tight windows most won’t.

Of course, this high-variance style can cut both ways. Williams was exposed against top defenses Utah and Notre Dame this season, forcing too many balls into coverage. His decision making and processing still require development to reach consistency. Coming from Lincoln Riley’s system could also limit the learning curve, despite the coaches Williams would have in Chicago.

One crucial area of evaluation will be Williams’ size, as he was listed at 6-foot-1 but skepticism exists if this is accurate. Quarterbacks 6-foot or shorter have found NFL success but remain outliers, so Williams’ hand size, weight and other measureables will shape opinions. If he measures below listed heights, it creates doubt if he can hold up to NFL punishment.

From the Bears perspective, incumbent QB Justin Fields showed flashes in 2023 but many still question if he is the long-term answer. The front office remains committed publically, yet the #1 pick provides temptation to pick a hand-picked QB. Williams and new OC Shane Waldron have potential fits, so plugging him into a system tailored to his skills has logic. Then again, trading down to stockpile picks to support Fields has equally strong merits.

Ultimately Williams is alluring but risky, while Fields offers mystery but already some investment sunk cost. Do the Bears gamble on the unknown ceiling of each player? The Combine could prove decisive, but fans seem split if mortgage assets for Williams or stay patient around Fields’ trajectory. GM Ryan Poles has a franchise-shaping decision ahead, hopefully choosing the quarterback who can ultimately return the Bears to contender status once again after too long away.
