Hey there, fellow Bears Fans!

The Chicago Bears have entered yet another offseason full of questions and speculation around the direction of the franchise. One area with growing optimism is the team’s young defensive cornerback Jalen Johnson. Johnson had a breakout 2022 season, establishing himself as a building block for the future. He recently voiced his support for retaining Justin Fields as the Bears starting quarterback going forward. Johnson emphasized the importance of continuity and locker room culture, citing the negative impact of the brief Chase Claypool trade. With Johnson entering the final year of his rookie deal in 2023, he is due for a substantial contract extension. The Bears have plenty of salary cap space to offer him a deal in the range of $15-18 million per year. Retaining players like Johnson who embrace the team’s vision will be critical for the new regime.

In addition to Johnson, the Bears must make a crucial decision on their next head coach. After firing Matt Eberflus, rumors have surfaced around top candidates like Jim Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin. Harbaugh has a strong track record from his time at Stanford and with the San Francisco 49ers. However, Tomlin’s remarkable run of sustained success with the Pittsburgh Steelers is truly rare. In 16 seasons, Tomlin has never finished below .500 or missed the playoffs in back-to-back years. Bringing in a proven winner like Harbaugh or Tomlin would reinvigorate the locker room. It may also help persuade stars like Johnson to stick around.

While the spotlight shines brightest on head coaches, the Bears have seen promising development from current assistant Richard Hightower. As special teams coordinator, Hightower has helped the Bears excel in the third phase of the game. His thorough explanations of technique and schemes in press conferences provide a window into his preparation and communication abilities. With rumors of an expanded role on the next staff, Hightower represents an under-the-radar building block.

Of course, beyond established veterans and coaches, the Bears’ future lies in the 2023 NFL Draft. Holding two picks in the top 10, Chicago must hit on young talent to replenish the roster. Many mock drafts predict the Bears using a high pick on a quarterback like Will Levis or Anthony Richardson to compete with Justin Fields. However, late-rising prospects like Michael Pratt of Tulane or Bo Nix from Oregon would make more logical targets on Day 2. An especially intriguing wildcard is reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jaden Daniels from LSU. Though undersized, Daniels has a live arm and the athleticism to execute creative run schemes. With proper development, he could emerge as an explosive backup alternative.

Before drafting another passer, though, the Bears must evaluate embattled offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Fairly or not, Getsy has borne the brunt of criticism for the offense’s regression in 2022. His unit ranks near the bottom of the NFL in points per game, passing touchdowns, and explosive plays. Several of Getsy’s staple concepts like screen passes have grown frustratingly predictable for opponents. Getsy’s future is unclear heading into a vital offseason for the offense. With assets like Johnson and two first rounders in their back pocket, the Bears hope their coordinators, talent evaluators, and leaders will align to lift the franchise back to relevance in 2023.

Bear Down Bears fans! and as always… PEACE!
