The Chicago Bears ended their 2023 NFL season with another disappointing loss to their longtime rivals, the Green Bay Packers. The final score was 17-9 in favor of Green Bay, dropping Chicago’s record to 3-14. This game exemplified the Bears’ struggles all season long, especially on offense and along the offensive line.
With the loss cementing their last-place finish in the NFC North for the third straight year, calls are growing louder from Bears fans and analysts to blow up the coaching staff. Head coach Matt Eberflus finished his first season unable to lead Chicago to competitiveness in the division, raising questions about his long-term viability. The author specifically calls out Eberflus and his staff as needing to be replaced for the Bears to take the next step.
The game itself saw Chicago fail to capitalize on knocking Green Bay out of playoff contention. The Bears defense entered the matchup playing well in recent weeks, but they regressed badly against the Packers’ balanced offense. Quarterback Jordan Love threw for over 300 passing yards, while running back Aaron Jones gained over 100 rushing yards. With no takeaways generated, the Bears D should shoulder much of the blame for this loss.
Offensively, Chicago’s makeshift offensive line paved the way to another dreadful performance. Injuries forced backups like Doug Kramer into the starting lineup, and key starters like Braxton Jones and Teven Jenkins struggled badly. The result was both poor run blocking and constant pressure on Justin Fields in the passing game. Fields ended his season with another underwhelming passing performance, unable to elevate Chicago’s offense above its weak supporting cast.
This game made it clear that GM Ryan Poles absolutely must upgrade the offensive line talent around Fields in the 2024 offseason. The Bears have the #1 and #9 overall picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, plus major cap space to improve via free agency as well. Poles seemingly swung and missed on several of his 2023 free agent signings like Lucas Patrick and Dakota Dozier, compounding Chicago’s weaknesses up front. With quality centers and guards set to be available, Poles has no excuse not to reshape this line into an adequate unit next season.
The larger question is whether Chicago should move on from key decision-makers like Poles and Eberflus after just one season leading the rebuilding effort. The author argues strongly that the Bears cannot accept more losing seasons, demanding a quick turnaround in 2024 to start contending again. For a proud franchise with an impatient fanbase like Chicago, mediocrity cannot be tolerated long, even during a rebuild.
Eberflus was expected to at least field a competitive defense and establish a winning culture centered on hustle and effort. After this loss to Green Bay, neither goal was truly accomplished in year one. Poles talked a big game about correcting past Chicago front office mistakes, but so far Fields doesn’t have the supporting cast to develop. Fair or not, there is real pressure to fix these issues immediately in 2024.
Another losing record, more poor quarterback play, and getting dominated by division rivals yet again is simply unacceptable for the Bears going forward. For the team to reward its loyal fans who have stuck by it through recent struggles, progress must be made next season without excuses. Poles and company have their marching orders – rebuild the offensive line properly around Fields this offseason no matter what it takes.
Anything less in 2024 could mean sweeping changes to Chicago’s leadership. GM Poles understands the team must support Fields properly to determine whether he is a true franchise quarterback. If not, the Bears may have two top-10 picks in 2025 to grab a QB if Fields was set up to fail. Either way, winning football must return soon to the Windy City.
Bear Down Bears fans! and as always… PEACE!
