- Disappointed with the poor start to the season, going 1-3 in the first 4 games. Coaching staff has not had the team prepared.
- Defense has looked bad under head coach Matt Eberflus’ scheme. Lacking energy and intensity.
- Offense started slow but showed improvement recently. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy’s playcalling has been questionable at times.
- Injuries have impacted the team, but coaching staff needs to have the players ready to play. Can’t use that as an excuse.
- Changes likely needed on coaching staff if team doesn’t start winning consistently. General manager will need to evaluate at end of season.

Hey there, fellow Bears Fans!
The 2023 season has been extremely disappointing for us Chicago Bears fans so far. With the team starting off an abysmal 1-3, many fans including myself are losing patience with head coach Matt Eberflus and his staff. Their inability to have the Bears prepared and playing competitively has been unacceptable.
After an offseason filled with optimism around QB Justin Fields’ development and an influx of new talent, the Bears have massively underperformed expectations. The supposed defensive “guru” Eberflus has led a lackluster unit that lacks intensity and big plays. The defense ranks near the bottom in points and yards allowed. Eberflus’ Cover 2 scheme has been picked apart far too easily.
The pass rush led by Robert Quinn and Trevis Gipson has rarely impacted opposing QBs. No consistent pressure leads to big pass plays given up in the secondary. Rookie corner Kyler Gordon has struggled mightily early on. The run defense occasionally gets gashed for chunk yards as well, unable to get stops.
Tackling has been a major issue – Eberflus’ fundamentals and “H.I.T.S” principles aren’t translating. The defense looks undisciplined and unprepared, with the coach’s leadership being questioned. Eberflus took over defensive play calling after the Packers debacle, but things haven’t improved much.
While the defense flounders, at least there are bright spots on offense. OC Luke Getsy’s unit lacked identity early on, but has shown week-to-week improvements. Getsy’s gameplans and playcalling were widely criticized after the first 3 matches, appearing too conservative at times.
But the offense came alive against the Commanders, with Fields passing for over 300 yards and RB Khalil Herbert rushing for over 150. Getsy allowed Fields to push the ball downfield more, while still mixing in screens and runs. Fields also tallied his first TD passes of the season.
Fields himself has been solid, using his arm and legs to make big plays. The offensive line has given him better protection after early struggles. RB David Montgomery along with Herbert have formed a strong 1-2 backfield duo. New top WR Darnell Mooney has been quiet so far however in the passing game.
Overall, the offense seems to be trending upwards, especially in the red zone where the Bears had zero TDs until last week. Getsy and Fields are developing some chemistry. As long as the O-line holds up and skill players stay healthy, this unit can continue improving. The talent is there, it just needs proper utilization.
Injuries have hampered the Bears’ progress too, especially on defense. But every team deals with injuries, so they must perform in spite of them. The coaches need to have the next men up ready to contribute. No excuses for such uninspired and sloppy play after four games.
Changes could be coming to the staff if Chicago continues losing. While GM Ryan Poles likely gets more time to rebuild the roster, he may lose patience with Eberflus quickly if the Bears keep getting embarrassed. A defensive-minded coach needs better defensive results.
So in summary, Bears fans are beyond frustrated with the lack of competitiveness seen so far in 2023. The coaching under Eberflus and coordinators has been questionable on both sides of the ball. However, the offense shows potential for growth if coaching improves and execution follows. The defense though remains a massive work in progress, and Eberflus must fix it quickly.
Overall, my faith in the Bears coaches to lead this team is dwindling. But with possible changes looming and playmakers like Fields in place, some hope still exists for a turnaround. I’ll continue rooting for the Monsters of the Midway to recapture their storied physicality and championship spirit. But more losses may test even this diehard fan’s loyalty if coaches don’t demand better.
